A new high for Hip Hop this year as West Coast Emcee Kendrick Lamar wins the Pulitzer.
While everyone has had their eyes set on Mumble rappers, Emcees is skinny jeans, purses and rainbow hair, new highs for Hip Hop have been set.
First this man has brought Hip Hop to new levels and other than in small circles, seems to barely being talked about. This man has a Pulitzer Prize, 3 Grammys, A MacArthur Fellowship and more than an armful of Tonys. He has spent 10 weeks atop Billboards Top Rap Albums in 2015 and is coined as "The Man that took Hip Hop to Broadway." This man is a New York native and an amazing lyracist. He is the writer of many things including the Broadway smash "Hamilton". You should check it out if you can, and you should definitely go get the Hamilton Mixtape. This man is Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Second, the Golden Boy of Hip Hop, Compton Emcee Kendrick Lamar has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Kendrick is the first Hip Hop artist to gain this honor but also the first artist that is not a classical or Jazz musician.
“It shines a light on hip-hop in a completely different way. This is a big moment for hip-hop music and a big moment for the Pulitzers.” Dana Canedy
So while many on social media are claiming that Hip Hop is dead and new Hip Hop is trash, these men are taking Hip Hop to new levels, places it has never been before. I personally think it's the best time ever for Hip Hop and if you think it is dead, you are not looking in the right places.
