With the recent passing of another Devoux brother OG Godfather, I figured a shed some light on these Iconic Westcoast artists.
Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. is a family of Samoans from Carson California, the 218th St Piru area to be exact. Raised in the church they would practice their P Funk before anyone else would show up. All members of the group are members of either the West Side Piru or Samoan Warrior Bounty Hunters.
In the late seventies the family, 2 uncles, Godfather and a few other members started a dance crew called the Blue City Strutters. They focused on Boogaloo, Strutting and Popping/Locking. Carson was a meeting point for the dancers from all over the city with the locations like the Carson Theater, The park with the Free lunch, and the Carson City Pool.
This crew later formed Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. with some of the younger brothers and consisted of the seven brothers (Paul, Ted, Donald, Roscoe (who was a Park Village Crip), Danny, David and Vincent better known as Ganxsta Ridd, Godfather, Kobra, Murda 1, Monsta 0 and Gawtti)
In a gang related incident where the youngest brother was mistaken for Ganxsta Ridd was shot and killed. It was after this that they decided to focus on the music and began touring Japan in the mid to late 80s. With the release of the single "R.A.I.D." Boo-Yaa returned to California to release their first album in March 1990 "New Funky Nation." Iconic within the West Coast Hip Hop scene and credited with being one of the first Hardcore Gangsta Rap Groups and the first group fully tatted up. A later incident at a party Gawtti was shot 7 times and this lead to retaliation the ended with Murder 1 serving a 10 year sentance.
The group would go on to release 8 albums between 1990 and 2006, and can be seen all over the West on features and solo projects.
Their album West Koastra Nostra was a project put together by the brothers to bring the WestCoast closer together having Bloods, Crips, Aftermath and Tha Row together in the same room. The album would consist of features including Crooked I, Knoc'turn al, WC, Mr Short Khop, Kurupt, Mack 10, b Real, Eastwood, Battlecat as well as Eminem.
