Behind The Scenes - Blackbook Sessions

The Trenches, where all the ideas come together.

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - Things I had no words for"

~ Georgia O'Keeffe

The sketchbook has played a very important place in my art career from learning perspective, to comics, all they way through smashing outline after outline to logo and mural thumbnails.

I remember early that my sketchbooks would be filled of images from my comic books, Spiderman and X-Men as I practiced figures, perspective and copying comic book covers and posters. It wasn't too much longer after, that I found letters and lettering making its way into my books as my discovery of Graffiti began.

It wasn't really until High School that my sketchbook collection began to get out of control; there was the one for art class, the one I actually sketched in, the one for graffiti and I found I have always had that special sketchbook that was 'too good' to draw in. This was at a time that It wasn't so cool to do graffiti so I kept those sketchbooks pretty private all the way up through College.

During the College years my sketchbook collection exploded, each class having its own, various graffiti sketchbooks that got passed between members of the crew, personal sketchbooks as well as smaller ones suitable for travel.

At some point after the time, the crews grew apart and the transition to digital art, the sketch book

has taken on a whole new meaning.

Now that the majority of my workflow has transitioned to tablet though I still do have idea brainstorming through sketchbook I enjoy making the time to physically put the pencil to paper.

I would like to possibly in the future setup a camera for some timelapse sketching or at the least make some time to create some themed blackbook pages and work on some pencil sketches.

Let me know what you think? Do you still Sketch? How many sketchbooks do you own?
